As Belize continues to develop, the country faces many challenges regarding how and where development should take place. One of those challenges is determining where construction should and should not occur. Many residents wish to live close to the water, but this often creates challenges for both marine and terrestrial species as land is cleared and filled to accommodate waterfront development. This has become an increasing concern for both the government and coastal communities. Earlier this week, social media was flooded with complaints from residents of Placencia regarding a dredging operation taking place in the village. A developer had reportedly begun constructing what appeared to be a road across the Placencia Lagoon. Residents strongly opposed the project, arguing that it would negatively impact the marine environment, where dolphins and manatees are commonly seen. Residents took to social media and the streets in protest, and eventually the government intervened and took action to halt the project.
