PNP Encourages Belizeans To Support Stronger Environmental Protections

The People’s National Party is calling for an immediate suspension of all developmental approvals affecting Belize’s marine and coastal ecosystems following recent dredging activities in the Placencia Lagoon. In a statement issued on May 19th, PNP leader said the dredging controversy exposed what he described as major failures in environmental governance. While authorities later issued a verbal stop order after public protests and an investigation by the Department of the Environment, the PNP says the response came too late. The party argues that Belize’s reefs, mangroves, and coastal lagoons are critical to the country’s economy, culture, and climate resilience and should not be sacrificed for what it called short-term political and corporate interests. The PNP is also urging the government to establish a more transparent and scientifically based framework for approving coastal development projects. The party is encouraging Belizeans to support stronger environmental protections and greater accountability in the management of the country’s natural resources.
