The Ocean Hero Award has been presented to local entrepreneur and community activist, Mr. Denise Garbutt. Originally from the small coastal village of Punta Negra, Mr. Garbutt’s journey reflects both humble beginnings and a deep commitment to protecting Belize’s marine environment. Growing up, Dennis Garbutt was a commercial fisherman, relying on the sea for his livelihood. Over time, he saw firsthand the pressures facing Belize’s marine resources and made a conscious decision to shift toward sport fishing. Promoting sustainable practices that allow fish populations to recover while still supporting local economic activity.
