Celebrating Garifuna Culture And Heritage

Last week Tuesday morning, Front Street by the Cooperative Wharf in Punta Gorda Town was alive with Garifuna colors as the community celebrated Garifuna Settlement Day with the reenactment of Yurumei. The event featured lively drumming and dancing as participants made their way to St. Peter Claver Church for a Garifuna Mass, which was captured by PGTV. After the Mass, an official ceremony honored the occasion, followed by a vibrant parade. Distinguished guests included the Area Representative for Toledo East and the president of the Battle of the Drum Secretariat, who presented the history of the Garifuna’s arrival. The President of the National Garifuna Council also addressed the crowd.
