15th Annual Primary Schools Garifuna Translation Contest

On Thursday, November 14th, the 15th annual Primary Schools Garifuna Translation Contest was hosted by the Battle of the Drums as part of the November celebrations leading up to the 19th. Ten primary schools participated, each represented by two students. The competition tested participants’ ability to translate words, phrases, sentences, and proverbs from standard English to Garifuna. This year’s contest was highly competitive, resulting in a three-way tie for second place and a two-way tie for third place. The first-place winner was An’j Nunez from Gulisi Community Primary School. The second-place winners were Osmir Reyes from St. Benedict R.C. in Indianville, Zinaye Arzu from Richard Quin R.C. School, and Mikylah Nunez from Holy Family R.C. School. The third-place winners were Arrianna Ariola from Gulisi Primary School and Elijah Petillo from Bethel Seventh-day Adventist School in Punta Gorda.
