The People’s National Party is criticizing plans by the National Bus Company to purchase between 15 and 20 second-hand diesel buses. In a statement issued this week, the PNP said the proposed investment is a step backward for Belize, especially at a time when the country promotes itself as an environmentally friendly destination. The party argues that diesel buses contribute to pollution and increase dependence on fuel, which can place additional pressure on commuters when global fuel prices rise. Additionally, the PNP says support should be extended not only to the National Bus Company but also to independent bus operators to help them transition to more environmentally sustainable transportation. The party says Belize must match its environmental commitments with action and take steps toward a greener future for public transportation.
