The Belize Territorial Volunteers continue to remain vigilant in protecting Belize’s marine resources from illegal fishing activities. On Friday, May 8th members of the BTV were conducting a routine patrol within the marine reserve when they spotted a floating bottle in the water, immediately raising suspicion among the team. The patrol moved in to investigate and discovered several long lines hidden within the reserve. Long lines and gillnets are illegal fishing gear within protected areas, and the team proceeded to retrieve the lines from the sea. Following the discovery, the incident was reported to the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment, which co-manages the reserve.
