PG Citizen Defends Democracy

Jeremy “Jerry” Enriquez is not a politician, nor does he hold public office, yet his efforts have shown the powerful role ordinary citizens can play in defending democracy. In 2025, Enriquez challenged the government in court, arguing that the failure to redistrict electoral boundaries was unconstitutional. Working alongside distinguished Caribbean attorney Senior Counsel Anand Ramlogan, he pursued the matter through the High Court and Court of Appeal. The case is now set to be heard at the Caribbean Court of Justice on March 12. Despite facing a costly legal battle against a well-funded state, Enriquez continued his advocacy beyond the courtroom. Using Belize’s Freedom of Information Act, he filed formal requests seeking transparency on how much public money was being spent to fight redistricting efforts and how Community Development Fund monies were distributed across electoral divisions.
