On Saturday September 13th, the Belize Territorial Volunteers made their routine visit to the Sarstoon River, a practice they have maintained for over a decade. At 9:00 a.m., three boats departed from Punta Gorda enroute to the Sarstoon. Along the journey, the Belize Defense Force and the Belize Coast Guard provided escort and security for the volunteers. Upon entering the Sarstoon River, under the cover of the BDF and Coast Guard, the BTV observed clear violation of Belize’s sovereignty by the Guatemalan Armed Forces. However, the coordinated presence of the BDF and Coast Guard successfully repelled the Guatemalan forces, allowing the BTV to safely complete their mission.
