CARICOM Issued Statements Condemning Guatemala’s Aggression Against Belize.

Over the past week, the Sarstoon River—which forms part of the border between Belize and Guatemala—has become the most talked-about issue in our community. On Saturday, September 13th, nearly 50 members of the Belize Territorial Volunteers entered the Sarstoon River, where they were harassed by the Guatemalan Armed Forces. This incident, widely viewed as a violation of Belize’s sovereignty, has sparked strong regional and international responses. Both CARICOM, a 19-member organization, and the Commonwealth, comprising 54 member states, have issued statements condemning Guatemala’s aggression against Belize. In their releases, both organizations called on the Guatemalan government to respect Belize’s borders and to immediately cease all violations of Belize’s sovereignty.
