Classes cancelled and Flight Diverted Due To Poor Visibility and air quality Caused By Smoke

For weeks now, the entire country of Belize has been suffering from fires and smoke. Over the weekend, the smoke became so severe that the Ministry of Education has deemed it a health risk. As a result, they decided to cancel classes for schools in the Toledo District for  May 20th 2024. This is the first time in the history of Belize that smoke, and air quality issues have led to the cancellation of school classes. Another unprecedented situation occurred  May 19th 2024, in Punta Gorda town. A Maya Island Air flight attempting to land at the PG airstrip had to be diverted to Placencia because the visibility was too poor for the pilot to see the runway despite it being daylight. The situation would have been better if the PG airstrip had lights, but currently, there are none. We will continue to monitor this story.
