Conejo Village is a Maya village approximately 20 miles southwest of Punta Gorda Town. The indigenous village has a very innovative forestry group that does sustainable logging and every year the group reinvests in its community. Last week Thursday on Independence Day, the Rax Mu Qiche group opened a brand-new community center for the village and gave gift baskets to every household. This program is hailed as an example of good stewardship of the land that benefits the community as well. SATIIM is the NGO that assists the group with technical advice and SATIIM is proud to announce the achievements of this community-based initiative. We will have more on this story once we can get some interviews from the community members.
