BELIZE TERRITORIAL VOLUNTEERS PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dated: August 15, 2018

The Belize Territorial Volunteers have confirmed that the Peoples United Party Southern Caucus recently held a meeting and passed a resolution stating they were
“…firmly against going to the International Court of Justice”.
This decision was made public with the resolution being read on Krem radio/tv WUB show on Tuesday morning.

The BTV welcomes this bold and courageous move by the Southern Caucus and in particular our elected Representatives in the National Assembly-Honourable Rodwell Ferguson, Honourable Mike Espat and Honourable Oscar Requena along with newly elected Standard Bearer Dr. Louis Zabaneh.

Since the surrender of the Sarstoon River to Guatemala in May 2015, the Belize Government and the official Opposition party have abdicated their responsibilities on this matter. They have conducted themselves as if they are not answerable or accountable to Belizeans for this loss of national territory.

While it is clear to the BTV why our government has no intention to carry out an impartial, fact based public education program on the ICJ; we remain puzzled and disappointed with the conduct and continued silence of the Opposition on such a central and critical national issue.

The decision of the PUP Southern Caucus whose meeting was attended by no less an official than the Party’s Deputy Leader Honourable Cordel Hyde, has important implications. Also, the PUP must now break its silence and clear the air on where it stands on the ICJ issue.

Nothing is more dangerous to our young democracy than a silent and invisible Opposition whose elected leaders are paid by public funds to present alternatives to failed and flawed government policies.
