Wednesday, November 22, 2017. Garifuna Settlement Day activities culminated in Punta Gorda town on Sunday with a series of events that began early in the morning with the re-enactment of the arrival of the Garinagu to our shores in 1802.
Here is how that played out as actors portrayed Alejo Beni coming to request of the Superintendent to land in the colony of Belize and the subsequent refusals before finally agreeing.
Once on land, the arriving Garinagu group was joined by others in a celebration, complete with drumming and dancing, from the Cooperatives wharf, through the principal streets of PG and on to the St. Peter Claver Church for a Mass of Thanksgiving.
After the Mass of Thanksgiving which was celebrated by Father Calistos Cayetano assisted by Father Derrick Vo, a parade was held from the St. Peter Claver Church to the PG Central Park for the official ceremonies.
