Independence wins High School Battle of the Drums

Tuesday, Noember 7, 2017. On Sunday in Punta Gorda town members of the Battle of the Drums Secretariat attended mass at St. Peter Claver Church and thereafter visited some elderly folks and shut-ins who have contributed to the Garifuna culture.

During the visits gifts were given to the elderly and shut-ins by the Battle of the Drums Secretariat.

Meanwhile, the seventh annual High School Battle of the Drums was held last Friday in Belize City.

Independence High School

Teams of six each from participating schools competed to be crowned masters of the Garifuna drums at the high school level.

At the end of the event, first place was won by Independence High School.

They won five hundred dollars in cash, first place medal and a pair of Garifuna Drums.

Second place was won by Ecumenical High School from Dangriga.

They won four hundred dollars and second place medals.

Third palce was won by Welsey College who received a cash prize of $300.

Best Wanaragua or John Canoe dancer went to Kenyon Martinez of Independence High School who won $100.

Best Sisira Player went to Le-tesha Tate of Wesley College who won $50.00.
