Friday, October 6, 2017. Tropical Storm Nate is now churning in the Caribbean Sea and has passed hundreds of miles east of Belize.
Carrying maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, TS Nate is moving towards the north-northwest at 21 miles per hour and appears headed for the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Forecasters in the United States say that TS Nate will make its closest approach to Cancún and Cozumel tonight, where a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning is in effect.
In Belize, the National Emergency Management Organization, NEMO, says that the main threat from Tropical Storm Nate is expected to be thunderstorms and heavy rains, especially along the coast and the northern part of the country.
Localized flooding due to heavy rains is expected in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
