Fire destroys visitors center in Crooked Tree village

Crooked Tree village. Saturday, May 13, 2017. The visitors center and office building belonging to the Belize Audubon Society has been destroyed by fire.

Reports from Crooked Tree village, say that the building which was located at the entrance to the community, was gutted by fire around 3:30 am today.

In a statement posted on their social media page, the Belize Audubon Society confirmed the destruction of their visitors center and office building saying that “this is a tremendous loss to the Society. We are saddened by this unfortunate event; but we will continue our work in this Ramsar Internationally Important Wetland, an ecologically important portion to the Belize River watershed.”

The Belize Audubon Society’s statement concluded by promising that “we will overcome this hurdle.”
